Search Engine Optimization Training

How does one find search engine optimization training?  How one to know which school is the best education institution to become a trained professional in search engine optimization (SEO)?  Since search engine optimization as a career is relatively new – a little over three years old at the time of writing, it may be a hit and miss deal as far as training is concerned.  Currently, there is no official certification for this career option which is a part of internet marketing.  However, once you have learned the basics, the best way to learn the craft is to do it.  Practice what you learn.  Start your own site or blog and get it into Page One in Google.  It’s a lot of work, but it can be done.  Challenge yourself, your knowledge and your acquired skills.

There are many people that call themselves “search engine optimization experts.”  These people may even say that they’ve been in the career since the internet got going in about 1999.  Ask to see their website or blog and ask them what keywords they are targeting.  Check them out in Google.  If they don’t have their own website or blog, it’s difficult to believe if they really know what they are doing.  Targeting keywords and gaining a position on the first page of the Google search engine for those keywords is a skill which requires practice.  Show the world you can do it.  This is the only way to really demonstrate that you know what you’re doing.

There are several courses you can take online which will prepare you to become a search engine optimization expert.  However, just taking these courses will not make you search engine optimization.  You still have to learn by doing.  A piece of paper – a certificate or diploma, even though it will say you are qualified, does not mean that you can actually succeed at search engine optimization.  You have to “do it.”

If you are looking for courses to become a search engine optimization expert, there are several courses available that our staff at Verotaro Marketing have taken to hone their skills in search engine optimization.  We can recommend some of those courses to help you with your own skills development.

The University of Waterloo offers a course for beginners and intermediate persons wishing to learn and improve their search engine optimization skills.  In their continuing education online courses, the University of Waterloo offers the course “Achieving Top Search Engine Positions.”  The course includes in its syllabus:  keyword research, the history of the search engines, determining keyword effectiveness, how website layout affects your results, what black hat tricks and spamming techniques to avoid and basic techniques for marketing your site.  This online SEO course is a good place to start to learn the basics of search engine optimization and how to improve your ranking in the search engines.

The University of Toronto offers several courses and workshops dealing with marketing and social media marketing – all related to how one’s business or site can improve position in the search engines.  These days, not only do you have to know how to optimize a website for the search engines, you also need to know how to use social media for marketing your site.

There are also a lot of good books you could read to train yourself to become a skilled search engine optimization expert.  However, without actually doing search engine optimization yourself with your own site or blog, you will never truly be a search engine optimization expert unless you can show results, results that find your website in Google, on Page One.

Where to Get Backlinks

From time to time we will post information on Search Engine Optimization because this is a specialty of ours.  We also offer SEO and social training to both individuals and companies who seek to train their staff on Search Engine Optimization and Social Media marketing.

One of the most valuable ways to build authority in the Search Engines is to obtain back links.  This is known as off site search engine optimization.  Each back link is seen as a vote for your site which can help you improve your search engine rankings.  This is a task that can be done by an individual or a search engine optimization agency such as ours here at Verotaro Marketing.

The following is a list of methods to obtain back links for your website or blog.

1)    Press releases can be a valuable source for back links if used correctly.  Using the keywords as anchor text within the press release to link back to your website will help improve placement in the search engines.

2)    Design 10 microsites around your website.  All sites should look different and use anchor text within the site’s articles to link back to your website.  Each site must be different and all must be unique from your main site.  Do not use the same meta tags or description, template or copy.  However, there is a certain amount of work needed to achieve recognition by the search engines of these micro sites and that means creating backlinks for these sites.

3)    Create a blog.  A blog is a valuable source of backlinks to your main website.

4)    Article Submission Sites are also a good source of back links.  Articles submitted on subjects containing the keywords you want to rank for can be posted on many different article submission sites.  Eventually these articles will be used by webmasters and bloggers who want free content for their own sites.  These articles will then provide backlinks from a variety of related websites.  Article Submission sites such as Ezinearticles, GoArticles.com, ArticleDashboard, Searchwarp, Articlesbase, Web-source, SearchGuild, and WebwordIndex, etc.  Note:  EzineArticles is highly respected by Google.  It will take a lot of backlinking to obtain PR (page rank) for the articles on these article submission sites unless the site who uses your article already has pagerank for the page your article on which your article will appear.

5)    Submitting to Directory submission sites will provide anchor text back links to whatever page/pages your website is attempting to rank for.  Use high Page Ranking Directory submission sites.

6)    Social media sites.  If you are already using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.  There are other social media sites that can be used to gain backlinks.  Social media assists with inbound link production.  Social media sites are great for reputation management.  There is a need to be active and participate.  Inbound links will come from bloggers, resource websites, and forums.  A business needs to be active and distribute content for social media to work.

7)    Use Social Bookmarking sites.  One can submit links to articles/postings to such sites as Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Delicious and many others.

8)    Use Google Local.  This will help local customers find your website.  Use your address and as many keywords in your description as you can.

In conclusion, there is no better way to achieve back links than creating quality content.  When you have a high quality website, people will want to link to your content.  The frequency with which you update your website will also help you to gain a high page rank in the search engines, whether it is Google, Bing or Yahoo.  Yes, there’s a lot of work and time involved in the process and this is where hiring an SEO agency such as Verotaro Marketing is useful.
